Which face are you now?

September 23, 2010

Here in the United Arab Emirates, weekends fall on Fridays and Saturdays, Friday being the prayer day (like Sundays for Christians).

Hence, Sunday is typically the first working day of the week. My colleague made my day today in sending the facial expressions below supposedly depicting employee mood for each of the working days:

I wish you a happy Friday, friends!

I hope you have the happiest smile on you today for the week =)

And whoever thought I no longer sit there

April 21, 2010

Keeping a clear work desk is not always good and could signal another message.

Isn't my desk so clear that whoever took my only desk accessory (my specialised company calendar) last night or early in the morning either missed to twist his/ her head towards my name plate (upper right corner) as an indicator that someone owns it; or thought I left the company and that the admin just forgot to remove my name plate?

Ok, I am actually not complaining,  just an excuse to showing off I can qualify for the company's clean desk policy :)

What does Tasking as a finance term mean?

February 08, 2010

Let alone my showing I lack knowledge, this post is for finance starters like me (I call myself one, am always a starter =)) !

Tasking is usually heard of from the Planning/ Budgeting and Forecasting peeps. It refers to either (1) the target reduction in budgeted costs that is called for from the budget holders, or (2) the target addition/ increase to budgeted revenue that the sales management is asked to achieve. Budgets are built in detail but below the detail total is a "task" in value of how much further cost reduction, or further sales increase is expected. (said these in my words though, anyone who can say it more concisely?)

Twenty months since I first heard the term, I havent had the luck when I searched it's meaning online. Just recently, my manager asked the budgeting peeps it's meaning. My lesson? Hindi ako nag-iisa!

A Day of Praise

January 13, 2010

My previous posts had been exuding air of my restlessness. The air is getting better so I owe to blog it too. I missed to express these two days back:

... is a day of praise. I'd continue to look positively on things when I know I had been good. Some people are making it hard for me but I'm thankful I smiled amidst the struggles. They are now smiling back.

... I'd continue to believe the good in everyone. I'd keep learning to manage restlessness, to minimise letting anyone get a share of it.

... I learned that my expectations of some people could fail, even from one I deal with five days a week. They could either be the reverse of their goodness or mean-ness. I have to consider this before I start a move.

... Worrying at uncertainties is a great waste of time. Things could turn out well. At points where situations are going astray, worrying clouds the exercise of wisdom towards the best action.

... I take big risks aiming at better things, and I know as has always been, that it will not be a wrong decision if I accept and work properly with the challenges that comes with it.

As my situation is coming from so-so to so-good, I look forward to the transition in the coming weeks to come smoothly. Wish me well =) . And I wish you well too =) .

2010 Handbook

January 12, 2010

... and I am still waiting for the right time to plead. Grant me wisdom o Lord so I take the right steps to let everything be fine in this big move...

Meantime, here's the 2010 Handbook (copied from FB) to strenghten wisdom with:

Health:

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants..
4. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games
7. Read more books than you did in 2009 .
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9. Sleep for 7 hours..
10. Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:
11. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don’t over do. Keep your limits.
14. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need..
18. Forget issues of the past. Don’t remind your partner with His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate others.
20. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree…

Society:
25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for everything..
28. Spend time w/ people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
30. What other people think of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
32. Do the right thing!
33. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. GOD heals everything.
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change..
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come..
38. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it.
39. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy.

Am I being penalized for working hard?

January 10, 2010

Today, I am determined not to let tension get the better of me (as in my whining in the title). I am browsing facebook in between, and I stumbled on this from Raquel. I thought it's worth sharing:

Buhay Akawntant

January 07, 2010

Work passion and parenting neglect

December 15, 2009

Past 11pm and Mommy J just arrived from work. Her five-month old Baby J is now asleep.Tomorrow she wakes up and head straight prepare for work. It has been the same scene since she started work two weeks back.

I have yet to tell her how I am carrying guilt having been amiss to my Son when I had done the same.  Though I'l also share how I advanced careerwise in doing so.

And oh, there's also neglecting one's health. There's missing lunch, theres' cups and cups of coffee, there's eye pains from continuous monitor focus, there's physical stress/ tensions/ worryings to beating due dates, there's missing sleep from reaching home late.

Yeah, in this fast-paced environment, career and parenting is just a matter of choice. Count it a thousandfold blessing when you can cover both without sacrificing the other.

When sacrificing is inevitable, I guess what matters is learning to manage time and learning to put things in perspective of what's the better choice. It signals seeing what needs to be corrected.

The workplace could be bunch of people having different levels of work passion. It pays to be passionate and at the right timing, it is rightfully rewarded, but there are times it is ignored and this leads to de-motivation. Or, what one does extra is not needful.

Lessening passion for these unnecessary parts of the work decreases stress level as well as lessens overstaying at the workplace -- in exchange to adding quality time for the family.

And as my colleague said, "If you get sick, your company will not be there, your family will be".
